On November 16, 2011, the Board of Directors of Alpha Natural Resources, Inc. adopted amendments to the Code of Business Ethics principally to (i) clarify an employee’s ability to use Alpha’s computer systems for limited, incidental personal communications, subject to the limitations set forth in the code and Alpha’s other related policies, (ii) clarify Alpha’s policy regarding the use of social media sites, such as Facebook and Linked-In, by employees and (iii) revise and clarify Alpha’s procedures for employees and, in some cases, outside persons to report health or safety concerns or possible violations of law, regulations, Alpha’s policies, or the code to the appropriate persons at Alpha.
